Harbor Expansion in Palacios - Turning Basin #4 Project Successfully Completed

Excerpt from Matagorda County Economic Development Corporation Newsletter ~

Winter 2008

The Port of Palacios added its fourth turning basin when Shirley & Sons Construction “pulled the plug” on the recently finished project.  The Port, under the jurisdiction of Matagorda County Navigation District #1, added 2,400 linear feet of new bulkhead to the 10,000-plus feet of dock already on the Port.

The new turning basin will be home to a boat manufacturing business, an expanding barge and tug building enterprise and will give needed space to a number of local seafood companies.  The 320,000 yards of soil excavated during the “big dig” were relocated to an adjacent 100-acre commercial center which is available for development.  Other new business contracted with the Navigation District includes a contract with a local developer to offload aggregate cargo transported to Palacios via barge.

The Navigation District also has various waterfront development sites available for mixed-use projects that could include residential, hotel, conferences facilities, retail, commercial recreation, shopping center, office and light industrial, or other appropriate developments.  For more information on these available properties, contact Owen Bludau, executive director, MCEDC, at (979) 245-8913, or Tony Rigdon, Port director, at (361) 972-5556.
